Flossing is a great way to deeply clean your smile and prevent dental problems, like tooth decay and gum disease, but sometimes flossing can be a tricky and complicated task, especially with braces, but we are happy to help you!
Many people don’t think they need to floss when they have braces, but that couldn’t be more false. When you have braces, it is extremely important to floss your smile; in fact, it might even be more important to floss your teeth when you have braces than when you don’t have braces! This is because the objects that get stuck in your braces can easily cause tooth decay and other major dental issues. So, if you keep from flossing, your smile has a high chance of becoming decayed and severely injured. Now, in order to have a healthy and strong smile, we encourage you to floss your teeth with the following steps:
1. Use about 18 inches of floss and thread one end under the main wire of the appliance.
2. Gently push the floss between your teeth with your thumbs and index fingers.
3. Slide the floss against the sides of each tooth and remove the plaque that resides there. This will help prevent gum disease in the future.
4. Once the area is clean, pull the floss out from between your teeth and bring the floss out from underneath the wire by pulling on one end of the floss.
5. Repeat this process between each tooth but remember to use a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth.
This technique might take a little more time than your traditional flossing technique, but it is definitely worth it. To help make the task a bit easier, your orthodontist will provide special tools and tips that will help you have a better and more successful experience flossing.
