Halloween can be a scary time for your pearly whites, especially because of the countless treats we put into our mouths after the many hours of trick-or-treating. But we are here to help you have a healthy as well as enjoyable Halloween! To prevent tooth decay while you eat your favorite treats, we invite you to do the following on Halloween day:
Clean your smile
Do your best to clean your smile as much as possible throughout the day. If you brush in the morning and at night, floss at least once during the day, and rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash before you go to bed, you will be on the right track. Doing so will help you deeply clean your teeth as well as the crevices between your teeth, removing the sugar particles, bacteria, and plaque from your smile.
Choose your candy carefully
Try not to eat the candy that will stick to your teeth for a long period of time, like Jolly Ranchers, gob stoppers, and suckers. These candies will cling to your teeth and quickly promote tooth decay.
Eat your candy at the right time
Eat your candy during or after your meals. Because of the saliva produced while eating, you will have a high chance of washing away the sugar molecules as you eat your treats.
Drink more water
Drinking water will help rinse and wash your smile throughout the day. If possible, drink fluoridated water to not only wash your teeth, but to strengthen them as well.
Chew sugarless gum
We recommend chewing sugarless gum that has been approved by the American Dental Association throughout the day. Doing so will produce saliva and wash the harmful particles away from your teeth.
