The enamel layer of your teeth is very hard and extremely durable, yet there are times when a fall or blow to the face can badly chip or fracture one of your teeth. This is even more likely if you grind your teeth at night. Even if the damaged enamel doesn’t cause pain, you should still have a Jeff Jones, DDS dentist restore the tooth with a crown before decay sets in to the exposed surface.
Your dentist will start by examining the tooth, to assess the extent of the problem and make sure the pulp and other interior structures of the tooth are healthy.
Then, they will remove the enamel layer of the tooth leaving a post-like abutment behind. The abutment is essentially the dentin, and pulp of the tooth still anchored securely in the socket.
Then a detailed impression is made of the area to be sent to our dental lab as a guide for preparing your permanent crown. Then the dentist will secure a hard plastic temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.
A member of our staff will call you to schedule your second appointment once the dental lab has completed your permanent crown. During this brief appointment, the temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown is cemented in place.
If you have a badly chipped or fractured tooth you should call Jeff Jones, DDS’s office in Dallas, Texas at 214.824.2130 to explore your restoration.
