All You Need to Know About Sedation Dentistry

Are you terrified of the dental office as well as every dental tool associated with it? If so, we are happy to tell you there is a way to rid your dental fears, and that’s with sedation dentistry!

Sedation dentistry is a great tool that helps each patient feel more and more comfortable in the dental chair. At Jeffrey V. Jones, DDS, we are happy to offer:

Nitrous oxide sedation
Nitrous oxide is a sedative that is also known as laughing gas. Laughing gas is a light, flavored, gas-like sedative that is inhaled through the nose. When you come into our office, our dentist will place a small mask over your nose. Dr. Jeff Jones will then ask you to inhale deeply as the mask releases the sedative. After time goes by, the sedative will make you feel tingly and relaxed. You will continue to feel this way throughout the appointment. When your treatment is over, your dentist will remove the mask and the sedative will wear off quickly.

Oral sedation
Oral sedation comes in the form of a pill. Generally, you will take the pill prior to your appointment and it will make you feel a bit drowsy. This will relax you while you are in the hands of the dentist. You will most likely stay awake throughout the treatment, but you might not remember the appointment. It is best that you have someone take you home once the treatment is finished.

IV sedation
IV sedation is a type of sedative that is inserted into your vein through an IV. This sedative will affect you quickly and it will help you immediately relax while you’re at our office. The dentist will be able to adjust the level of sedative you receive, and there is a good chance that you will sleep throughout your treatment. Make sure you have someone to drive you home after your appointment.
