Braces: Your Questions Answered

Posted .

Do you have a million questions about braces that are keeping you from taking the first step toward aligning your smile? If so, we are happy to help you! We have provided answers to the following questions to help you feel more confident and comfortable about orthodontic treatment. We understand that orthodontics can be overwhelming, confusing, and even scary at times, but these answers might help you feel a bit better about it:

How long will I need to wear braces?
Treatment time varies from patient to patient, and your orthodontist is the only one who can give you an individualized treatment plan that answers your question. However, in general, treatments can last anywhere from 9 months to 5 years. Although this may be the case, we usually see treatment plans that last around 18-24 months.

Can I look cool with braces?
Yes, it is possible to look cool with braces. Nowadays, braces are common and they become cooler and cooler each day. Many people see braces as a “grill”-type appliance that covers the teeth in valuable jewels and treasures. Although your braces won’t technically include jewels and treasures, many people still consider them as so. You can also decorate your braces with colored bands. At our office, there are many colors to choose from, and you are more than welcome to style your appliance with as many colors as you would like.

Do braces cause pain?
There will be times when your teeth feel sore after your tightening appointment, but that is completely normal and necessary. It is a way of telling you that your teeth are quickly moving. The soreness won’t last long and you can take over-the-counter pain medication if needed. Some people also have a hard time with the brackets and wires cutting the lips and cheeks. If you have this issue, you can fix it by covering the brackets and wires with your orthodontic wax. The wax will protect you from the pocking and prodding of the braces.

Can I still play sports while I have braces?
Yes, you can play sports while you have braces. The appliance won’t slow you down in any way. However, we do recommend protecting your teeth, lips, tongue, cheeks, and appliance by wearing a mouth guard. The guard will prevent oral injuries and broken brackets.

Can I eat while I have braces?
You can eat your favorite foods whenever you would like, but we do, however, strongly recommend avoiding the following foods:

• Caramel
• Taffy
• Chunky peanut butter
• Gummy bears
• Popcorn
• Gum
• Nuts
• Hard candies

We also recommend cutting hard-to-eat foods, like bagels, corn on the cob, apples, hamburgers, and carrots, into small pieces before you eat them.
