Orthodontic brackets are the metal or ceramic pieces that are glued to the front surfaces of your teeth and are attached to the wire that stretches across your smile. These little pieces can break easily, whether it’s because of chewy or sticky foods, an oral injury, or improperly brushing and flossing your teeth. To help you manage and improve the situation, we recommend doing the following things:
No. 1: Check to see if the bracket is still attached to the wire. If it is still is attached, it’s best to try to keep it from sliding back and forth on the wire. You can stabilize the bracket by putting orthodontic wax around it. If the bracket is no longer attached to the wire, take the bracket out of your mouth and bring it into the office with you during your next appointment.
No. 2: If there are any protruding wires that are poking or bothering you, clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers as short as possible. Or, you can also try putting it back into place with a pencil eraser or Q-Tip.
No. 3: Schedule an appointment. It’s very important that you schedule an appointment as soon as possible. If you delay fixing the bracket, additional problems could occur and your treatment time could be lengthened.
