Using a Teeth-Whitening Gel

Posted .

Many people feel that a bright, white smile says a lot about them, especially when making a positive first impression. Over time things like age, tobacco use, foods and dark beverages can dull our smile. There are a few options available to you for whitening your teeth.

Using a teeth-whitening gel is one of the more common options for dealing with teeth that have some minor to moderate surface stains. Different brands might choose different chemical compounds to affect the whitening of your teeth. Some of the more common chemicals include carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.

Some people have questions about the effects of these compounds on the health of their tooth enamel, so it’s a good idea to talk to your dentist before starting any tooth-whitening regimen. When selecting a particular brand, be sure to look for a brand that has earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. This seal insures that the ADA has researched and tested the product for safety and effectiveness.

To use the gel, simply pour the product into the tray provided and insert it into your mouth. Different manufacturers might recommend keeping the tray in for a longer period of time. Most only require 30 to 45 minutes. When the bleaching is done, remove any excess gel from the gum line using dry cotton swabs. You should then brush your teeth and rinse the trays.
